MATRIC participated as a partner with the University of Notre Dame on an ARPA-e project investigating phase-change ionic liquids (PCIL) for carbon dioxide capture. Significant energy savings can be realized (operating costs about 1/8 of amine scrubbing) by utilization of the heat of fusion released by the liquid as it solidifies on release of absorbed carbon dioxide. MATRIC performed detailed process simulations to explore options for the design of an absorption/desorption system. An economic evaluation of the potential commercial process was completed for comparison with the amine-based process. MATRIC then built and operated a laboratory unit to demonstrate the concept with simulated flue gas, using hundreds of grams of PCIL in the cycle.
