MATRIC MATTERS: Process Troubleshooting, Root Cause Analysis. A small company had obtained promising results from evaluations of a product made in initial laboratory production. However, products made in more recent preparations had not been as effective. MATRIC was engaged as an independent participant to guide and contribute to a troubleshooting campaign. An extensive set of data was collected and analyzed, and sessions with the project team were organized. Potential causes were evaluated with tools common to problem-solving used by Kepner-Tregoe and Six Sigma methodologies. MATRIC recommended a strategy for investigating and validating the true root cause and prepared a report for reference and guidance in the process of validating the true root causes. The company was then able to take actions on an informed basis.
